“This hurt….” – Chris Jericho suddenly drops another huge WWE reference amid Royal Rumble return rumors

Amidst his continued hiatus from AEW, Chris Jericho continues to fuel rumors surrounding his potential WWE return. The veteran has taken to social media to once again reference his old stomping grounds, and one of his toughest matches there.

Earlier this year, Chris Jericho’s social media activity spawned speculations that the inaugural AEW World Champion could be parting ways with the Jacksonville-based company after his contract expires at the end of this year. Fans online have for some time now been discussing the odds of Y2J returning to WWE subsequently, such as in the form of a blockbuster surprise entrant in the 2026 Men’s Royal Rumble match.

Recent reports have claimed that the Triple H-led promotion could be offering Jericho a final retirement tour. Considering how often The Ayatollah of Rock N’ Rolla has been posting throwbacks to his time in the sports entertainment juggernaut on social media lately, many fans are convinced that his comeback could just be a matter of time.

The former Undisputed WWE Champion took to his Instagram story recently to once again share a glimpse at his past in the Stamford-based company, posting a clip of a particularly painful spot from a TLC bout for the Unified Tag Team Championships between DX and Jeri-Show at TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs, back in 2009.

“This hurt….” – Jericho reminisced in the caption.

Incidentally, Jericho is currently colleagues with The Big Show, as the latter is also signed with AEW under his real name, Paul Wight. The two even teamed up on AEW programming, joining forces with The Golden Lovers in a Street Fight against the Don Callis Family back in November, 2023.

When was WWE and AEW legend Chris Jericho last seen in action?

Chris Jericho has not competed inside the squared circle since losing his ROH World Championship in a heated and brutal Title vs Mask match to Bandido at AEW Dynasty 2025 back in April. Following on the heels of his defeat, The Learning Tree lashed out at his students, Big Bill and Bryan Keith, for not helping him retain his belt, while failing to unseat The Hurt Syndicate for their tag titles at the PPV themselves. After The Redwood stood up to Jericho for himself and his teammate, however, the legend threw a surprising fit on live television before walking out on his proteges.

It remains to be seen if Chris Jericho will be WWE bound as is expected, or if he will continue his All Elite tenure after all.
